Fergus is now home. He has 3 types of meds and some special liver diet food. We go back on Friday for more blood tests to see if his levels have managed to remain stable now that he is off the IV.
He is so happy to be home.
The vet has diagnosed Chronic Active Hepatitis but we still don't know the root cause.
We need to decide if we continue with the additional diagnostic tests that the internist recommends such as biopsy and ultrasound. More big bucks.
His experience is that dogs can be treated for this to prolong their lives, but there is no cure. He says on average they can live another 1 - 2 years. I can't think about that now.
Thank you all for your concern and kind comments and well wishes for him and us. It truly is like having a kid sick, especially when you are such an animal lover.
Anyone have any similar experiences, please share.
St. Francis, please heal him.

Oh honey hug and kiss that sweet baby for me!
At least you have him home and I am sure that will go a loooooong way in the healing process.
:( I'm glad to hear he's home and I'm sure he's much happier now. Wolfie and I are keeping him in our thoughts!
Oh, ICL...
In my thoughts.
Glad he's back home with you. Hard decisions. Quality of life would be my only concern. If he's happy, then I'd continue on with meds, etc.
In my heart and prayers you will be.........
I'm really glad he's back home..
I'm so sorry to hear this news.
When Shubi got sick with GME, we had to decide how much treatment we would do and how far we would go.
I did her chemo treatments at home, and I did not want her to be hospitalized. She hated that.
I did as much as I could, and I let her tell me when she had had enough. I had two more wonderful years with her and I don't regret that at all.
I still miss her like crazy. Shubi was the dog of my heart and my soul!
God Bless!
Oh, how sad news! That would be tough on anyone. Like you said, it's like when kids gets sick. Tough.
I have no such experience and have no information to bring to this subject.
It demands to think through such decision. We want to do everything for our pets, but there is always the pet's best to think of that comes first.
How is he doing now? Much better?
I assume that you've searched and read a lot about it on the internet too.
*heavy sigh*
Poor you.
I wish I could swing my magic stick and just make it go away!
